arles notes…
meatyard arts, arles 2010.
this is our second arles exhibition and print sale.
the meatyard arts project is not complicated and needn’t be presented in anything but ‘plain speak’, lets say john dos passos rather than tom pynchon.
the aim is to show pictures to people… to provide space and support for photographers working through various ideas and themes… such as… the tensions inherent in memory and identity in germany, the pyrrhic ‘victory’ of privatisation evidenced in abandoned u.k care homes, street portraits on manhattan … negotiating manchester’s jewish community… or the gauche display of pre celebrity tattoos… photographers quietly and intelligently going about the business of transformation, bringing us their findings – their photographs – the evidence as they see it.
meatyard arts is totally independent and self funded, we are peripheral to the arts funding beanfeast and have no embarrassing sponsors in the cupboard… although good, kindly philanthropists would be very welcome!
this is one of the reasons we have the print sales, vulgar to those with precious sensibilites, but necessary to us if we are to sustain and extend the meatyard arts activities… all of the proceeds of the sales goes to the artists themselves or to funding what we do – for instance we are planning a meatyard arts new york show before the end of the year…
to that end, as well as individual prints, this year we present the inaugural ‘meatyard arts printbox 2010’, an edition of 10 boxes, 12 prints in each box… (boxes 1/10 and 2/10 sold…) a better investment than BP shares methinks…
